Psalm 51:1-2 “1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!”
In Psalm 51 we see an example of how David was a man after God’s own heart, and I started to ask myself “Can I truly say that I, myself am a man after God’s own heart?” Like David, I can honestly say that I am NOT sinless and I struggle with sin in my life. But what makes David a man after God’s own heart? He is open to God’s dealings with him! The most notable sins of David that are depicted in the Bible is when he took another man’s wife, afterward, he tried to deceive the man and finally, he had the man killed when he could not deceive him. One might ask, “How could a man like this be after God’s own heart?” Well… David realized what he had done and he repented from it and turned his eyes towards the Father.
The thing that makes David such an amazing example to follow is not that he never sinned, but it’s how he repented. The fear of the Lord was in him and he begged God for mercy because he understood just how terrible the sins were and they were separating him from God. A bad example would be if David was prideful and tried to justify his sin.
How many times in today’s culture do we hear the excuse “If it feels good then it can’t be bad.” or “What’s the big deal? It isn’t hurting anybody.” We need to acknowledge our sin and repent to God! And allow Him to heal us and work in us to conform us more and more into the image of His Son!
